While the beats still kept during a good part of the repro­ductions within limits approximately those just determined, there were con­stantly recurring moments of much wider change of rapidity. They would suddenly quicken into a whirring sound, returning after a few seconds to ap­proximately the former rate. On listening to the tone, the absolute constancy of the earlier trials had given place to occasional marked unevenness of pitch.
